A. As students enter the room, have them log on. They should make sure they have the right computer. Once everyone is in the room and seated, start class. If they have not completely logged on, they can after the bell ringer. B. Bell Ringer: Ask students to complete the following two tasks 1. If you have not already shared your homework from Monday, please do so now. If you did it on Google Docs make sure it is titled correctly (last name CA 8. class period J4All5Ws). If they did it on paper, they should turn it in to you. 2. Then they should complete today’s bell ringer (I may have written it on the easel). They should do this on Google Docs. They should title the document (last name CA 8 period justice). They should share it with me. The Bell Ringer is: Using the poem “justice” answer the following two questions: a. Write one sentence that explains the attitude the vigilante has about the police – be sure to include the reason for her feeling(s). b. Write one sentence – two sentences that explains what happened in this poem. c. Is justice the best one-word title for this poem. If yes, say why. If no, explain and suggest a better word and explain your reasoning. C. Once students complete bell ringer, please ask them to go to templates on Google Docs and find the “Literature Circle – Connections” document. Once they open this document, they MUST save it as their own. Please tell them to title it (last name CA 8. class period LC connection). I left a hard copy of this with my plans, so you can see what they are looking for. They need to share two connections they made to their reading. This is their homework for tonight. 1. The following questions will help them to do this.
a. How do you connect with a character in the book? How are you like this character? Do you have similar personalities? Have you had similar experiences? Explain.
b. How does this book connect to another book you read? Give examples and an explanation.
c. How does this book connect to the outside world? What is an event that has happened/or is happening in our world that is similar to the event in the story? Identify connection and explain.
2. Please tell them that I posted these questions, as well as today’s lesson, on the wiki – in the “What we did in class today section…” In addition, please tell them to put post-it notes on the pages that sparked the connection or to jot the numbers down.
3. Finally, tell them that I will create an example on the wiki (Lit Circle section) by the end of the day. If they would like a hard copy of the chart or example, they need to let you know. Please tell them to see me in PM homeroom to pick it up. D. Students have the rest of the time to work on their movie which is due today, by the end of the day. Tips on the Works Cited page are on the wiki (Stirring Up Justice – One Step at a Time page). I have Michaela’s (period 3) flash drive on my desk (back of the room). If I do not have the flash drive for Taylor (period 1), please tell her that I will get it to her ASAP. E. Announce that retakes for the one-word strategy can be taken now or during FLEX or lunch tomorrow. For those who want to take it now: Give them a quiz sheet and a paper strip (both on my desk) to students. They should write on the paper strip only – not the quiz (you will need these for each class). Please remind them to read the directions. Tell students that when they finish they should return both the quiz sheet and their answer sheet to you. Then work on their movie. F. If they finish their movie or go as far as they can, they may work on their homework or read.
